On the face of it, horrormaster David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers (1988) is a “twin film”—you know, like The Parent Trap. But I say it’s much more than that. To my eye, this film actually about doppelgängers —those uncanny, mysterious doubles that can be so vexing in literature and film. Where does Alfred Hitchcock figure in this?
